- [Announcer] We are go for liftoff, in T-minus 30. All systems are a go.

- [Stuart] Sara, tell us about your life before change.

- [Sara] Oh my goodness, right.

Well, at the tender age of 48, I won't go into the whole of my life before the change, but the key thing is that I was a professional photographer.

I'd been self employed for 12 years, so I'd built, I turned my hobby of photography into a business, and I absolutely loved it.

It was a real journey in itself, and I got to the stage where I had a...

Great Escape Podcast episode 6 - A Little Escape on fear

Alex Hannold climbed the 3000 ft vertical rock face called El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in the USA. He did it on his own without ropes or any climbing aids - a technique called Free Solo. Is he mad? Probably but he said this:

"You face your fear because your goal demands it"

If your goal isn't demanding things of you that are stretching you is your goal really worthy of the name?

I've been thinking a lot recently about a film I watched the other day by a guy called Alex Honnold who is a free solo climber.
So basically that means he climbs really, really difficult rock faces without any ropes and on his own.
It was June 3rd 2017, he climbed El Capitan which is a 3,000-foot rock face in Yosemite Park in North America.
Most people take a couple of days to climb it with ropes and help.
He climbed it in just over three hours on his own, no ropes, no safety equipment, just straight up this rock face.
Now apart from the insanity of doing such a thing and I think the film covers that quite...

One of the biggest questions I get asked goes something like this:

I'm stuck, I can't see a way out of this, I can't leave my job because I can't afford to pay the bills if I do leave my job. I can't start my own business because I haven't got an idea, any resources or any backing. I can't leave my marriage because we can't afford two houses.

The question is always "I can't do what needs to be done" and the simplest question I reflect back at that point is this... "are you sure that what you think has to be done has to be done?" Sometimes what has to be done is nothing to change the situation but everything to change our own attitudes.

Introduction

Welcome to the Great Escape Podcast pilot episode. My name is Stuart Morris and throughout out my life, as a child, an adult, a husband, a father, an entrepreneur and as an employee I’ve found myself in various situations that were impossible to bare and, at the same time, seemed impossible to change. Over the years I’ve developed a framework for facing and changing these situations and finding freedom. In my conversations with other people, I’ve found that this framework fits pretty much all of their situations too.

I know that this podcast will help you to build your own Great Escape Plan.

In this pilot episode I’m going to outline this framework and in upcoming episodes I’ll be interviewing a variety of people who have faced impossible situations in their lives and found the way to change their circumstances to bring their whole lives into better balance by changing whatever aspects of their own internal attitudes, their health, their...

Paying suppliers in a timely manner is a moral imperative

Uncategorized Dec 18, 2017

This is an old story. A while ago the BBC reported (in this article) the food supplier "2 Sisters" was asking its suppliers for 120 days to pay and a 3% discount if it payed within 90 days. Under some circumstances it wants 134 days to pay!

The questions being asked revolve around whether this is immoral or simply unreasonable. Actually I think it is both immoral and unreasonable but it also shows incompetence on the part of the 2 Sisters management.

There is only one reason to delay payment... you don't have the cash to pay. If a business of this size (4000+ employees, £800M turnover) can't pay its bills on time then you have to wonder whether it is in a difficult financial position. If your customer is not able to pay your bills within a reasonable time what confidence can you have that they'll be able to pay them at all?

Any business should pay its suppliers promptly. It shouldn't be using them as an unsecured overdraft. Suppliers aren't there to be beaten into submission....

Sell something to someone

Uncategorized Dec 11, 2017

One of my past students called me yesterday. We had a wonderful conversation. I'll keep things anonymous for the moment but when she's ready I'll let you all know what she's up to. A few months ago we were discussing her plans for a business. She has a great idea in an under-served niche of a huge market. The biggest problem she had identified was the problem of raising enough capital to start buying the necessary equipment. We talked around the subject for a while as I tried to get a feel for how much she was looking for.

I suggested that, rather than trying to raise a few tens of thousands to purchase several machines and then go out and try and sell her product, she should go find a customer first... and try and get them to pay, if not up front then certainly on a lease.

She called me yesterday to say that her first customer was about to sign a contract and they wanted to pay monthly for the service. Now all she has to find is enough to buy the first machine (a few...
